The Eisenhauers came from the state of Hesse for working for glassworkers of Verrerie-Sophie as woodcutters in 18th century (Verrerie-Sophie actually Stiring-Wendel near Forbach in Moselle - France - see the column devoted to the Schmid glassworkers in Verrerie-Sophie).

Notably, it’s a certain Johann Friedrich Eisenhauer and his son, Johann Nikolaus, married to Anna Margarete Stübel. Johann Nikolaus has, among others, a son, Peter, borned the Sunday, March 15th 1722 in Verrerie-Sophie. The name “Eisenhauer” can be translated literally by “The one who cuts the iron in bars” and this same name will become Eisenhower in United States.

The Eisenhauer family arrived in Lorraine, in the framework of a development wanted by the Count of Forbach: Henning Von Stralenheim (a Protestant aristocrat come from Sweden). This one understood that the region should be repopulated after the depopulation, notably due to the Hundred Years War. As the only wealth was constituted by the forests, so he needed many woodcutters.

Moreover, in 1718 the building of the glass factory called Verrerie-Sophie in honour of his second wife, Sophie, put the finishing touches to his scheme and served to be the driving force behind the economic recovery.

The Count succeeded his bet and the coffers filled. However the damages caused to the forest and the massive arrival of foreign populations which are not Catholics gave rise to complaints. Therefore inhabitants complained about that to the Lorraine duke.

In this case, the Eisenhauer family, come from Germany and Mennomite (member of a branch issued of the anabaptism founded by the Dutchman reformer: Menno Simonsz 1496-1561), was particularly aimed.

Thus, after an order of the Lorraine duke in 1724 to carry out a census for “expelling anabaptists and other people from same sects”, Johann Nikolaus emigrated with his family in America which was a british colony.

They arrived in Philadelphia the Sunday, November 17th 1741 after a terrible crossing on the ship: “Europa”. On the seven children embarked, three small girls were dead. The four boys as Johann Peter survived. Johann Peter lived until 80 years old. Married three times, he had 17 children and died in 1802.

It’s from him, directly and four generations later, that will come Dwight Eisenhower, “Ike”, the thirty-fourth American president (according to investigations made by M. Walter Neutzling in 1985).
